What is the Second Chance Residence Permit?
The Second Chance Residence Permit is a special type of residence permit intended for third-country nationals who:
- previously resided legally in Greece;
- lost their legal residence status due to the expiration or non-renewal of their residence permit; and
- continue to maintain genuine links with Greece while fulfilling the legal requirements laid down by the applicable legislation.
The purpose of this provision is to prevent the permanent exclusion of individuals who, for objective or practical reasons, were unable to renew their residence permit within the prescribed deadlines.
Who Can Apply?
This residence permit may be available, among others, to third-country nationals who:
- previously held a valid residence permit in Greece;
- allowed their residence permit to expire without renewal;
- had a renewal application rejected because it was submitted out of time or because the renewal requirements were not fulfilled; and
- are not subject to any grounds relating to public order or national security that would prevent the issuance of a new residence permit.
What Are the Main Requirements?
Each application is examined individually by the competent authorities. In general, applicants are expected to provide:
